“Fashion is fun and thinking about fashion is also fun. This is because fashion relates to beauty, and at the same time, it provides us with a glimpse of our very self that cannot be replaced by anyone else, within the course of our daily lives. I believe that retrieving the words to talk about fashion, our own words that are not borrowed, would bestow anyone’s life with something akin to courage.” Nakako Hayashi (excerpt from Kakuchō sure fashion [Expanding Fashion])

This is an exhibition based on Nakako Hayashi’s book Expanding Fashion (Space Shower Networks) published in 2011. Hayashi worked as an editor for Shiseido’s culture magazine Hanatsubaki in the 1990s and later became independent and promoted fashion and art mainly through her own magazine here and there. In Expanding Fashion, she introduces the new movements that happened in the world of fashion and around since the mid-1990s onwards. The vibrant activities of the artists that Hayashi throws a light upon drew an enthusiastic reaction.
This exhibition based on Hayashi’s book, examines fashion from the aspect of creation. Regarding fashion as an instrument for developing aesthetics in everyday life, and for communicating our own ways of life and thinking to others, the exhibition will present the works of artists from in and out of Japan that employ diverse methods ranging from independent publishing to photography, painting, video, performance and workshops to create things related to fashion in novel ways.
The exhibition will be an opportunity to rethink about fashion not as a subject of trends and consumption, but as the locus of self-expression that is closest to our daily lives.
